Freelance Writing Success
I'm a freelance writer and an opinion journalist. Decades ago, being a freelance writer meant working as a free agent in a particular genre of writing. A freelance writer may have worked as a sub-contractor for newspapers, magazines, or another, rather specific, field. Today's freelance writing is far removed from that of the past. We're still free agents, or sub-contractors, if you will, but we're actually required to produce a somewhat different product than we once were. The key to today's freelancing is versatility.
With the internet opening up new avenues for freelancers, the possibilities are endless - for the right writers. Look, not everyone can write. Yet, the internet gives people the opportunity to recreate themselves on a whim. It's easy to call yourself a writer and far more difficult to produce the goods. And, if you're not willing to devote a great deal of time and effort into the biz, find another line of work. So, as a very versatile freelance writer, here's what I have to say to all the aspiring freelancers out there. Watch and learn. If you're really any good at writing, you can make a living as a freelancer. If, however, you're just a writer wannabe, don't waste your time, the buyer's time, or the time of those of us left to pick up the mess you've created. Writing is a job - a great job, sure - but a job nonetheless. Treat it as such and you'll find it's a very rewarding way to do business.
